"New Car and Truck Dealers -
Driving Strong Communities"
2011 Student Scholarship Program
The Washington State Auto Dealers Association (WSADA) awarded a $2,500 scholarship to Alyssa Garrett and Sarah Weedin in the 2011 “New Car and Truck Dealers – Driving Strong Communities” scholarship program. Applicants were asked to conceptualize a public service announcement showcasing how Washington new car and truck dealers help people across the state through the National Automobile Dealers Charitable Foundation (NADCF). Both recipients focused their message on NADCF’s efforts to ensure personal mobility by supporting organizations such as Canine Companions for Independence.
“The judges were impressed not only with Alyssa and Sarah’s creative and thoughtful applications, but also their outstanding academic and community accomplishments,” said WSADA Executive Vice President Vicki Giles Fabré. “Both are remarkably capable, determined, and compassionate young woman who will undoubtedly make a significant impact on their communities in the future.”
Alyssa is a 2011 graduate of Newport High School in Bellevue, where she was an honor student and excelled in Accelerated Math and Science, and Advanced Placement classes. Her charitable contributions included volunteering for Women’s Enterprises International Walk for Water which raises money to provide water tanks for homesteads in rural Kenya, and organizing a Seattle Adaptive Sports exhibition wheelchair basketball game to benefit disabled athletes.
Sarah is a 2011 graduate of Yakima Public School’s Yakima Online! Program. Sarah previously attended LaSalle High School in Union Gap where she was a top student and participated in the school band and a variety of school-sponsored community service projects and fundraisers. Sarah is active in Yakima’s Holy Family Parish, where she is a member of the church’s Youth Council and has volunteered for vacation bible school camp, as well as various parish events and fundraising activities.
“Washington dealers as individuals are very active in supporting the academic goals of young people,” Ms. Fabré added. “The Washington State Auto Dealers Association is honored to take that a step further as a group and help Alyssa and Sarah as they embark on this important next phase in their lives.”
Since the 2008 inception of the Association’s scholarship program, a total of $27,500 has been awarded to eleven students from across the state.
