"New Car and Truck Dealers Make a Difference"

2010 Student Scholarship Program

WSADA awarded $2,500 scholarships to Haley Beglau, Shoreline, and Kay Havlicek, Wenatchee, in the 2010 “New Car and Truck Dealers Make a Difference” program. Applicants were asked to design a flyer promoting a charity a local dealership supports, and write an article describing how that involvement helped the organization.

In her application, Kay focused on Wenatchee dealership Apple Valley Honda’s second annual Children’s Charity Classic golf tournament benefitting Royal Family Kids’ Camps, an international non-profit group which offers camps for abused, neglected and abandoned children. Kay is a homeschooled high school senior enrolled in Running Start at Wenatchee Valley College. She has been an active member of Girl Scouting for twelve years and earned the organization’s highest award – the “Girl Scout Gold Award” - for her extensive volunteer work which included organizing a free day camp for underserved girls in the community. Kay planned, trained staff, taught and directed the camp which included art, singing, dance and drama. The girls also made bookmarks for homebound seniors.

Haley described Edmonds dealership Campbell Nelson Nissan-Volkswagen’s support of Vision House which provides transitional housing and support services to homeless single mothers with children. A senior at Shorecrest High School, Haley spent a year of high school in Australia. She has volunteered with her church’s youth group on numerous service projects including an outreach to the inner-city population of Vancouver, British Columbia, and coordinating a vacation bible school for a church in Ensenada, Mexico. Additionally, she dedicated her senior project to help The Landing, a youth shelter operated by the Bellevue YMCA. In just a few short months, Haley organized all aspects of a benefit concert from advertising to fundraising, and recruiting local youth bands. The concert was a huge success and raised over $1,000.

“The judges were impressed not only with the students’ outstanding creativity, but their academic and community accomplishments,” said WSADA Executive Vice President Vicki Giles Fabré. “Both are determined, compassionate and giving young women who think of others and how they can make a difference in the world,” added Ms. Fabré.

“Washington dealers as individuals are very active in supporting the academic goals of young people,” said WSADA President Bob Bridge, Bob Bridge Toyota, Renton. “The Washington State Auto Dealers Association is honored to take that a step further as a group and play a small role in helping Haley and Kay as they embark on the important next stage in their lives.”

Since the inception of Association’s scholarship program in 2008, a total of $29,000 has been awarded to nine students from across the state. Check back this fall for information on the 20111 scholarship program.
